“Yo, Jaden, man, come on. It’s your turn.”

Jaden brought the bottle to his lips and finished the beer in one large swallow. Rising, he reached for his bowling ball and moved to the end of the aisle. He took a deep breath and let the ball go down the lane. Another gutter ball.

“What the hell is wrong with you?” Jabarie barked.

“I’m having a bad night.”

“Obviously.”

Rolling his eyes, Jaden went back to drinking another beer under the dim lights in the bowling alley and watched as Jace bowl another strike.

“Now, that’s how you bowl!” Jabarie cried.

“I know that’s right. Not all of us are on our game tonight,” Jace said, adding more salt to his wound.

Jaden glared over at the two of them, then brought the bottle to his lips. They were right. He wasn’t himself tonight and knew the reason was that he couldn’t get Danica off his mind.

If he hadn’t known it before he definitely knew it now, Danica wasn’t engaged. If it had been someone else it would have been funny. But no matter whether she was engaged or not, the truth of the matter was she had dumped him. It had been one thing to think she left him for another man, but it was worse now to think that she dumped him because she just didn’t want to be with him. Only his pride refused to consider that possibility.

He truly believed that Danica had once loved him just as he had loved her but something had scared her and forced Danica to create a crazy last-minute story about being engaged. Instead of feeling rejected and letting his stubborn pride get the best of him eighteen months ago, he should have fought for their love.

“Man, get your head out of the sand. Marisa’s staring you down.”

He followed the direction of Jace’s eyes and sure enough as soon as his gaze traveled four lanes down, Marisa waved in his direction. Jaden nodded his head in acknowledgment, not wanting to be rude, then returned his attention to their table.

“Yo, man. What’s gotten into you? I thought you were trying to holla at Marisa?” his cousin Diamere said, sitting down beside him with a bottle of beer in his hand.

That was before Danica showed up at the garage.

“He’s too busy thinking about someone else,” Jabarie replied as he dropped down on the seat across from him.

Diamere shook his head. “Man, please don’t tell me you’ve fallen in love like these two fools here.”

Jaden took a sip from his bottle, then said with a scowl, “No way.”

Diamere gave a loud sigh of relief. “Thank goodness! You scared me there for a moment. You’re the only one I got left to hang out with.”

Jabarie snorted in response. “Just because I’m married doesn’t mean I can’t hang out. It just means I have someone at home waiting for me.”

Diamere crossed his fingers as if he were trying to keep the vampires away. “Like I said I don’t want any part of that.”

“You weren’t saying that when Ryan was trying to put those twins on you.
